The Renegades route the Comets in a 12 run rule game 12-1
Game Summary
Game two of the Indy Bonanza pitted the Chicago Comets against the Renegades. The comets finished 5th in the 2025 World Series. However, the team they brought to Indy was missing four of their top hitters and many new names unfamiliar to the Renegades. Boston won the coin toss and elected home team.
For the Renegades, Nick Morin-Tylock would call the left side of the defense in his second career start. Gina Devenish was in her 21st game on the right side. Ron Cochran would pitch to the majority of the hitters but Hunter Weissman would have Chris Kimball and Shayne Cantan and Jen Morin-Tylock. The Renegades wanted to get up early and get into their bench and depth for this contest. Boston entered this match up with just a 3-11 career record vs the Comets but a 2 game winning streak.
First inning
Legendary pitcher, Chad Perry started the game for Chicago on the mound. The Renegades knew this meant a lot of contact and the defense would get work. Dustin Youngren would lead off. On the second pitch, he lofted a high fly ball up the middle of the field into the second layer. It was hit right at Shayne Cantan. Cantan stood his ground and on the fourth hop it bounced into his chest and hands for the first out of the game. Alex Gamino then hit a grounder down the third base line. Shawn Devenish angled over from the left short position and back but the ball died before it got to him. He charged it and picked it clean for the second out. Daniel Hernandez (usually their DF) was batting third. He hit a line drive up the middle that died around 80 feet. Shawn Devenish raced to the middle of the field and made the stop. 1-2-3 inning for the Renegade defense.
Tyler Mireault would lead off for the Renegades. He saw four pitches and waived at them for his second strike out in a row (he struck out in his last of six at bats against Oklahoma after scoring four straight). Christian Thaxton fouled off the first pitch. On the second pitch, he hit a hard grounder past everyone down the third base line. Shawn Devenish then struck out on four swings and misses. Rob Dias then hit a grounder to the right side and scored. Drew Crook ripped the fourth pitch an sent a screaming line drive up the middle for a run. Chris Kimball then brought Hunter with him to the mound. After fouling off the first two deliveries he hit a bouncing grounder up the middle that got past the Chicago point defender, Daniel Hernandez and he scored the third straight run with two outs. Tyler Mireault then lofted a first pitch fly ball to the right side and Chicago could not gather it in time for Tyler’s speed. Christian Thaxton struck out to end the inning. After one, Boston led 5-0.
Second inning
Long time and former Comet Captain Kalari Girtley Jackson would lead off. She left her team to play for the all -woman Sirens team but asked back for this tournament. She struck out. Kendrick Vaughn also struck out, Another Comet legend, Mike Mcglashon would bat sixth. He lifted a weak flare to the left side. Shawn Devenish charged it from the left short position as it landed at about 55 feet. As Shawn went into his dive, he met the ball and it kicked off his knees about 4 feet in front of him. Shawn recovered in time to make the third out of the inning.
Shawn Devenish fouled off the first two pitches and then launched a bomb landing about five feet from the Home run line for arguably one of the longest balls he ever hit in a game in his career. Rob Dias then hit a dribbler to the right side that went about 55 feet and Daniel Hernandez made the stop for the out. Drew Crook then launched another bomb near the Home run line and scored the second run of his game. Chris Kimball then laced a line drive up the middle and he beat the play but, he ran to the inside of first base and missed it, his second missed base in two games and the out was given to Alex Gamino in the second layer. With a 7-0 lead, Jen Morin-Tylock stepped off the bench to hit for Tyler Mireault. She kept Hunter Weissman in to pitch for her. On the 6th pitch, she hit a grounder to the left side that was picked up by Daniel Hernandez.
Third inning
Coach Weissman would change the defense. Jen Morin-Tylock stayed in the game playing deep. David Marcano came into play the mid field spot and Elana Regan went to first base. Shayne Cantan moved from the mid field spot over to third base. Dustin Youngren struck out to lead off the third. Alex Gamino lifted a high pop short to the right side. Kimball was quick to get to the spot and picked the ball on his second try for the second out. Daniel Hernandez then hit a line drive past a diving Shawn Devenish. Shayne Cantan moved to his left, laid out and stopped the ball in his glove. Another 1-2-3 inning.
To lead off the third inning, Weissman pinch hit the DF, Shayne Cantan for the DH, Thaxton. This ended the use of the DH for the game. Shayne would elect to have Hunter Weissman as his pitcher. After fouling off the first two pitches, he blasted a bomb into deep left field for the furthest ball he has hit in his career on the fly for a run. Devenish then hit a tweaner past Hernandez. Girlty Jackson had to come up but she dropped to the ground too soon as the grass was still slow but dry at this point. Devenish beat the ball out and scored. David Marcano then stayed in and hit for Rob Dias against Ron Cochran. Marcano was too inconsistent and waived at four pitches for a strike out. Elana Regan was next, hitting in the fifth spot for Drew Crook. She hit a lazy line drive down the first base line and beat all defenders for her first run of the 2026 season. Chris Kimball was next and on the third offering from Hunter hit a grounder down the third base line that dies around 48 feet. Hernandez had to run from the point position to the coffin corner and he did not have enough speed to beat Kimball who sprinted down the first baseline for the run. Morin-Tylock then hit a line drive that hit the ground in front of Hernandez and he made a nice stop for the second out. Shayne Cantan then lofted a first pitch offering high in the sky to the opposite field and scored his second run of the inning. Shawn Devenish ended the rally on a weak grounder up the left center of the field. Hernandez moved to his right and made the stop. Boston led 12-0 and put the game into the 12 run rule. This meant the Renegades were playing defense for the rest of the game.
fourth inning
Kalari Girtley Jackson started off the inning with a whiff. Kendrick Vaughn hit a line drive to the left side. Cantan hit the ground to early and it got by him and died between him and Jen Morin-Tylock who was playing deep. David Marcano came in from the mid field spot and picked it up to make the stop. After this play, Tyler Mireault re-entered the game to play first base and Elana Regan moved to the left short spot to replace Shawn Devenish. Johnny Dominguez then entered to pinch hit for McGlashan and he struck out.
Fifth inning
Dustin Youngren led off with a line shot into left center. Jen Morin Tylock needed to angle backwards and she didn’t and the ball screamed past her as Chicago scored their first run. Combined with the OKC game, Boston’s defense had set down 16 consecutive hitters (with the aid of five strike outs in the tournament. Gamino then hit a bouncing grounder to the left side. Regan took a few steps in and made a nice play as she laid out for the first out of the inning. Hernandez struck out after he hit a line drive off Chad Perry’s face mask. Gritley Jackson then hit a flare to the middle of the field but Kimball got a great jump on it and got to the spot before the ball and he laid out and picked the ball clean for the third out.
Sixth inning
The Comets changed pitchers to start the sixth as Daniel John came to the mound to pitch. Kendrick Vaughn would be his first hitter. With a full count, he hit a weak grounder past the forty foot arc. Elana charged it as Vaughn ran by her in fair territory. Regan over ran it, collected herself, jumped back and made the stop with plenty of time. Dominguez then chopped at a pitch and hit a grounded right to Regan. She over ran it by about six feet, slid, pivoted and got back on her feet to chase it as it came to a stop. She ran right past the ball again, as it went under her legs as she fell to the ground. She pivoted around on her knees and picked the ball up off her back hip for the out. No style points on that play but it counts as an out. Youngren struck out to end the game
Game Summary
The Renegades closed out this 12 run rule victory with a 12-1 win, the 19th time in team history the Renegades have put a team in a 12 run rule in three innings or less. This marked the 201’st win in Renegade history and the 200th for Coach Weissman who was not with the team in the 2002 season. This game was the 31st time the Renegades had hit .571 or higher in a contest. but the story was also their defense as it marked just the 13th time the Renegades had stopped 92% of the balls hit at them in a contest. It also marked the 30th time the Renegades had allowed less than two runs in a game and the first opponent not named the “Strong” to be limited to one run since the Toronto Blind Jays in the 2019 World Series.
Chicago was paced by Daniel Hernandez who made four stops in the game. Dustin Youngren scored the only run for Chicago. For Boston the players of the game were Shawn Devenish who was 2-4 with three stops, Shayne Cantan who was 2-2 with two stops, Chris Kimball who was 2-3 with two stops and Elana Regan who was 1-1 with three stops. Boston was undefeated in their bracket and would change fields to go play the Indy Thunder on the ISC network tv game of the day!
