2025 Game results – World Series Day 4

Placement Bracket 9/12 – Renegades take out Cleveland

The biggest upset of the 2024 World series was the Cleveland Scrappers defeating the Boston Renegades 10-9 and eliminating them from double elimination.

In the 2025 series, Cleveland had already been part of multiple upsets. In pool play, Austin came in as the eleven seed and beat the 10 seed scrappers 12-2. Cleveland then got mercy ruled by Philly 15-1. In double elimination, they upset Bayou City 12-3 and then got upset by BCS 8-5.

The Renegades and Scrappers would face each other again, this time in the 11/12 game. The wounds were still fresh from last year’s defeat for Boston. Five of the seven starters for Cleveland were a part of the big win for Cleveland in 2024. Five of the six Renegade starters were also a part of that game.

Boston won the coin toss and Cleveland was the away team. Bryan Grillo would lead the left side of the Renegade defense with Nick Morin-Tylock on the right side. The grass was wet starting this game and that would slow the ball down and make it slick on defense.

First inning

Antonio Dobyne led off the game with a pop fly to the right side. Joe McCormick raced in and over ran it. He planted, pivoted, ran back and hit the ground..but all that took too much time and Dobyne scored. Steve Miller then lofted a fly ball up the middle. The ball bounced twice in front of Rob Dias playing in the second layer and he was able to stop it from rolling while on his knees long before Miller hit the base. Stanley Griffin hit a grounder that hugged the third base line. Shawn gave chase but could not get there. Shayne lined it up but it started to slow down as it got to him and even though he picked it clean, it took too much time for the speedy griffin. The inning ended with back to back whiffs by Tim Syphers and Andre Torres.

Tyler Mireault earned the leadoff spot in this game against Ron Cochran. However, he struck out to start off the game. Joe McCormick then got the Gades on the board with a hard grounder. Shawn Devenish then hit the first ball on a fly but Stanley Griffin is one of the best defenders in the sport and was there to pick it clean a few steps before Shawn hit first base. David Sanchez then hit the first pitch down the third base line. Griffin was on it but as he went to pick it, he kicked it past his back up and into the third layer giving Sanchez enough time to score. Luis Rodriguez subbed in for Shayne Cantan and struck out to end the inning. The score was tied at two after one.

Second inning

Elana Regan subbed in on defense for Luis Rodriguez and went to third. Juan Torres, a rookie led off the frame with a weak flare to the right side. McCormick chased in and over ran it again, this time, he was lower to the ground and that made it quicker for him to get to the ball and he nabbed Torres by a few steps. Dobyne and Miller whiffed to end the inning.

Hunter Weissman came to the mound to face Chris Kimball. Kimball hit a grounder up the middle and Stanley Griffin stopped him. Mireault whiffed again and Joe McCormick would also strike out. Both teams had four strikeouts in the first two innings and the score remained tied at two.

Third inning

The whiffs kept coming as Stanley Griffin led off the inning with a strike out. Syphers then hit a slow grounder about 55 feet down the third base line. Shawn Devenish chased it and as he arrived, Syphers tripped and fell. As he got to his feet, Shawn picked it for the second out. Christian Keeley then hit a hard grounder to the left side. Shawn shuffled to his left, laid out and made a nice stop to end the inning. The score remained at two each.

Shawn Devenish would lead off the third inning with a fly ball to the left side and scored. David Sanchez hit a grounder to Stanley Griffin for an out. Shayne Cantan then entered the game to hit for Elana Regan. He hit the 6th pitch into the third layer and as he ran to first, he tripped and dove face first and scored. Chris Kimball then stepped in against Hunter Weissman. For the first time in Weissman’s pitching career, he got hit by a low liner off his quad. With two strikes, Kimball hit a line drive up the right side past the second layer of defense and scored. Drew Crook popped off the bench to hit off Ron Cochran for an exhausted Tyler Mireault. Crook who had been looking for his bomb making swing all week finally connected on a shot and sent a screamer to left field past Tim Syphers and past the 170 line for a run he could walk to the base for. A huge hit for Crook at a big time and the Gades had a four run lead. Joe McCormick then hit a grounder past Griffin, but Christian Keely was there to make the stop for the second out. Devenish then hit a line shot past the third layer for his second run of the inning. David Sanchez ended the inning with a first pitch short pop fly up the middle and would be stopped by Stanley Griffin. Boston led 7-2.

Fourth inning

As the Gades went on the field, Drew Crook stayed in the game and went to third. Shayne Cantan also stayed in the game and went to the deep rover spot. Juan Torres led off the 4th with a strikeout. Dobyne hit a weak grounder to the right side. McCormick hit the ground and then moved on the ground a few feet to make the stop. Carlos Black (formerly a Tyler Tiger) came off the bench to it for Steve Miller and ended the inning with a whiff.

Shayne Cantan would lead off the 4th with a strike out. Chris Kimball then worked the count to three strikes off Hunter and hit a grounder that rolled just to the forty foot arc and Kimball was just barely able to run 100 feet quicker than Griffin could run 30 feet to get the ball. Drew Crook then hit the first pitch and was stopped by Carlos Black. Joe McCormick lined a shot into left field and he plated the ninth Renegade run. Shawn Devenish ended the inning with a drive to left field and Carlos Black stopped him in the 2nd layer of the defense. After four, the Renegades led 9-2.

Fifth inning

Stanley Griffin would lead off the firth with his second strike out of the game. Tony Guy was next, entering for Syphers. He grounded to the left side past Devenish and Drew Crook made the stop. Christian Keely then whiffed for the second time and the Scrappers went down 1-2-3.

The Renegades went to the bench to start of the 5th inning. The first off the bench was Luis Soto, hitting for David Sanchez. Soto waive four times against Hunter Weissman and strike out. Elana Regan then hit for Shayne Cantan and hit a grounder that Stanley Griffin over ran. As he turned to chase it, he picked it for the out on a bang-bang play as Elana Regan slid into third base. Jen Morin-Tylock then hit for Chris Kimball and would face Hunter Weissman. She was stopped by Stanley Griffin on another close play . The score remained 9-2.

Sixth inning

The Renegades would Keep Jen in the game and she went to the deep rover spot. Elana stayed in and went to first base. Juan Torres led off the 6th inning and hit a grounder up the middle. Devenish raced to the middle of the field and made the stop. Antonio Dobyne then hit a hard grounder into left field. Jen Morin-Tylock ran forward and never really heard the ball as Drew Crook would hold out his hand and ask her to stop chasing it forward and Dobyne scored his second run of the game. Carlos Black then hit one up the middle that Rob Dias could not handle and for the first time all game, Cleveland plated back to back runs. Nathan Weigand turned to the Renegade defense and made a comment about the comeback in 2024 and Rob Dias had some kind words that made his teammates laugh. Stanley Griffin struck out for the 3rd time and the second out. This brought Tony Guy to the plate. Guy hit a grounder to the right side. Elana Regan lined it up but Joe McCormick called for help and called specifically for Rob Dias. Just as Regan laid out, Rob collided with her and the ball rolled past them as Elana laid on the ground. Regan was shaken up on the play and after a visit from our medical team and the NBBA medical staff, she walked off the field on her own. This was a tough end to this game for both teams. Nobody wants to see someone get hurt at the end of a 9-3 game. The Renegades had to pull themselves together after losing their little sister to injury. Joe Yee would sub in at first base for Elana. Christian Keely ended the game with a strike out, Cleveland’s 11th of the game. Boston won 9-3.

Summary

The player of this game would be Shawn Devenish who plated 2 runs and made 3 stops on defense. Joe McCormick also scored a pair and made 2 stops of his own on defense while Chris Kimball plated a pair as well. For Cleveland, Stanley Griffin scored one run and made 6 stops on defense. Boston would finish 11th and Cleveland would take 12th. The irony of the double elimination would be that Oklahoma finished 5th (and Boston beat them in double elimination and BCS took 8th (Boston beat them as well in pool play). This was not what the Renegades came to do but in the end losses to the Edge (who played in the title game), getting walked off on by Philly (who took 3rd) and losing to Taiwan who played a great game is nothing to be ashamed of in the sport of Beep baseball.

Extra Exhibition game – Friendly vs Austin

Thanks to the agreement of Johno Flemming and the Austin Blackhawks we arranged a game where both teams could have an opportunity to play some of their deep benches to get more playing time for these two home grown squads. For the Renegades this would also be an opportunity for Hunter Weissman to be the primary pitcher for an entire game. The original plan was that we would self-umpire this game, however, coach Flemming offered to umpire the whole game once it started and the Renegades appreciated those efforts.

First inning

Due an injury that happened with 2 outs in the last game, Elana Regan was not available for this game. Chris Kimball would be the leadoff hitter without Elana available. He hit a three strike pitch up the middle to their designated fielder, Daniel Brock in the second layer. Jen Morin-Tylock, getting her first start would bat second. She hit a slow grounder to the left side and Sarai Hernandez laid out and made a nice stop for the second out. Guy Zuccarello was batting third in this game. He went right were Tylock went…a grounder right to Hernandez who made her second stop of the inning.

For the Renegades, Bryan Grillo would be calling the right side of this game with Gina Devenish working on the left side to get Gina more work on that side. The starting defense had Guy Zuccarello at left shorty, Chris Kimball at right shorty, Melissa Hoyt at Mid field as the designated fielder, Jen Morin-Tylock at 3rd base, Joe Yee at first base and Luis Soto at rover. Michael Donovan would be the Designated hitter.

Raul Rojas would lead things off with Molly Flemming pitching to Kenny Whittier. He would strike out. Davion Perez was next and also struck out. Saria Hernandez was next and with three strikes she hit a grounder to the left side. Guy took one step to his left and stopped it with his foot. After this play coach Flemming and Weissman had a talk and a plan to move Zuccarello out of the front of the defense. Originally, he was slotted to be the DH in this game but the injury to Regan had him in the lineup. Guy would be playing a new position in the 2nd inning.

2nd inning

Luis Soto would hit the second pitch up the middle. Pam Chesser gave chase and picked the ball up a split second after Soto hit third base. Joe Yee was next and would swing and miss on four pitches for the first out. This brought rookie Michael Donovan to the plate and Ron Cochran to the mound. Donovan had 4 swings but also a take but his trip ended in strikes as well. Chris Kimball then hit a hard grounder down the third base line and beat out the play with his speed for a run. Jen Morin-Tylock then double hit a ball that took off up the middle of the field. Daniel Brock laid out and it rolled over him. He was able to roll over and pick up the ball to end the inning. Boston led 2-0.

Starting the 2nd, Guy Zuccarello moved back to mid field. Chris Kimball moved to the left short for the first time in 2025 and just his third time in his career. Melissa Hoyt also moved up to right short for the first time in a game in her career. Crystal Kolwalski led things off with a fly ball up the right center of the field. Bryan Grillo made the call but Melissa was late to move and it got by her. Joe Yee backed her up and made the play in the second layer. Grace Lee then hit a weak grounder that passed the 40 foot arc on the right side. Melissa Hoyt froze and Chris Kimball came to the middle of the field to back her up but she was not there. He pursued, dove, missed it and then scrambled to pick it up right before Grace hit third base. Pam Chesser then hit a grounder to the right side. Hoyt stood there processing it and then broke to the line, slid and picked it right after Chesser scored the first Austin run. Rojas then lifted a pop fly to the right side that landed between Hoyt and Yee. Hoyt moved back and Yee crept in and the ball died between them. They both went for it but Hoyt got it right after Rojas scored the tying run. Perez then hit a grounder up the middle. Kimball slid over and missed it. Zuccarello came up and booted it with his knees and Perez scored the go ahead run. Hernandez then hit a nice line drive to the right side. Hoyt moved to her right and it got by her but Joe Yee was backing her up and made the stop. Austin led 3-2.

3rd inning

Guy Zuccarello started the third with a strike out. Luis Soto then hit the first pitch in the air to the right side and scored his second run of the game. Joe Yee took the first pitch and then with two strike, hit a grounder down the third base line. Hernandez ranged to her right and backwards making a great stop for the Blackhawks. Michael Donovan struck out to end the inning and Boston went down 1-2-3.

Crystal Kowalski led things off with a strike out. Grace Lee then hit a ball up the middle. Kimball over stepped it and then dove backwards and as he went to the ground, it hit his hand and he was able to gather it quickly for the send out, Pam Chesser struck out to end the inning for Austin.

4th inning

Chris Kimball led off and hit a hard grounder to the left side. Hernandez moved to her right and laid out feet first, the ball squirted over her ankles. She had to get off the ground as Kimball raced to first. The original call was an out but after discussing it with a few people, the call was reversed and the game was tied. Jen Morin-Tylock took a two strike pitch on a line to the left side. Hernandez gave chase and Perez was also there but Jen beat it out for the first run of her career. In a class move, Flemming suggested to give her the ball to commemorate the moment. The Renegades erupted for Jen as they knew how hard she worked all year. She had also been slowed by a hamstring injury just days before the Beast began which prevented this moment from happening sooner. Zuccarello then hit a high coffin corner to the left side. Hernandez was slow to charge it and Guy was safe. Luis Soto laced a line drive past all three layers into right field for his third run of the game. Joe Yee then hit a second pitch grounder to the left side. Hernandez could not corral it in time and Yee was safe at first. At this point injuries started to build up for the Renegades. Michael Donovan re-injured his thumb in his last at bat and was out of the game. Melissa Hoyt would hit and the Renegades would lose the DH/DF role with this move. She stepped up and the first pitch she swung at both Weissman’s stood dumbfounded as her swing was about 2 feet lower than it had been all season. Though it was in a different spot, it was a stronger and quicker swing and adjustments started though they were not successful and the at bat ended in a strike out. Clearly, the cricket training Melissa Hoyt had been getting was impacting her beepball swing, in a good way. Chris Kimball then hit a first pitch grounder up the middle. Brock laid out and was there but he could not gather it in time to stop Kimball. Jen Morin Tylock then hit a weak grounder just past the 40 foot arc on the right side. Sarai Hernandez sprinted to the right side of the field and got it right before Jen hit first base. Sarai Hernandez would end the inning gobbling up a Guy Zuccarello grounder. Boston put up 6 runs and led 9-3.

At this point in the game, Nick Morin-Tylock came into call the last three innings on the right side. Rojas led things off with a strike out. Davion Perez took a hard grounder to the right side. Joe Yee and Guy Zuccarello both dove at it and it went past them for an easy run for Austin and their strongest hit of the match. Hernandez then worked Molly to her 5th pitch and hit a grounder up the middle on the right side. Hoyt moved off the crack of the bat, chased in and stopped and went back and picked the ball clean as she started to look more comfortable on defense. Boston led 9-4.

5th inning

Luis Soto started things off with a grounder just past the 40 foot arc on the left side. Hernandez chased forward and Soto ran after the ball. STOP was screamed and both players stopped in their track avoiding a collision. Hernandez was awarded the out. Joe Yee, who was starting to struggle with the heat fouled off the first two pitches then took the next two pitches and went down on strikes. Hoyt came up with her new swing and hit a grounder to the right side. Chesser gave chase, dropped to her knees, crawled, got up and dropped again, this time on the ball to make the stop off the bat of Hoyt. The score remained 9-4.

Grace Lee hit a flare to the right side. Hoyt had to chase forward and toward the line. Grace was still running just barely inside the line as the play evolved but Hoyt, dove on the ball and picked it clean for the stop as her confidence began to soar. Pam Chesser struck out. Raul Rojas then hit a bouncer up the middle Guy Zuccarello took a few steps forward and picked it up for the out. Boston led 9-4

6th inning

Chris Kimball would lead off the inning, hit a ball off the shins of Hunter Weissman but eventually would strike out. Jen Morin Tylock then grounded to the left side on the first pitch she faced and scored her second run of her career. Zuccarello put a charge into a line drive to the left side but Hernandez would angle back and take off on it and make the play of the game on defense for the second out. Luis Soto then hit a ball up in the air to the right side and scored his first career 4 run game. David Sanchez subbed in for Joe Yee who had to exit the game due to heat exhaustion. Facing Hunter for the first time in game play he fouled off the first pitch and then hit the third pitch on the ground to who else, Sarai Hernandez who made her 8th stop of the game. Boston led 11-4

With Yee out of the game, Sanchez would play an inning of defense for the first time all week and would go into play 1st base. Tyler Mireault also subbed in for Chris Kimball and went to play Left shorty for the first time in his career. For Austin, Robert Perez came off the bench to hit for Davion Perez. He hit a grounder to the left side. Tyler got there and was on his knees trying to find the ball. He scooped once and came up empty, he scooped a second time and came up empty. He got it on the third try for the out. His teammate Rob Dias claimed he looked like he was playing Hungry-Hungry Hippos on the field on that play. It was just Tyler’s third career defensive stop. Sarai Hernandez struck out. Crystal Kowalski then hit a pop fly to the left center of the field about 65 feet out. Tyler Mireault could not find it in time and Crystal scored her first run of the contest. Grace Lee ended the game with a grounder to the right side that got past Hoyt but Sanchez crept up and made the stop to end the friendly game. The final score was 11-5 but the most important part of this game was the experience that both teams got for players who did not see a lot of playing time during the week and that will help them grow as players in the future.

Wrap up

The standouts of this game would be Luis Soto for his first ever 4 run game as he led all hitters. Jen Morin Tylock also scored the first two runs of her career. Sarai Hernandez was the defensive player of the game with 8 stops of her own for Austin. Hunter Weissman also pitched his first full game and his line would be 11-27 with just 5 Whiffs, possibly one of the best first starts in Renegade history with just five strike outs and an 18.5% K rate for the game.
