2025 – Game Results – 1st leg of the Beast of the East
The Renegades lost the coin toss and would be the away team even though they were playing home – that’s how Beepball works – the fate of the home team is determined by a coin. This would be the first time in league history that a former World Champion was playing in Woburn, the Philly Fire won the series in 2024. The Renegades lost to the Fire twice in 2024 by a combined total of just 5 runs including a one run loss on a bang-bang play. Philly had already played in two tournaments leading up to this game while the Renegades were playing their first contest. Boston would be without Christian Thaxton, David Sanchez and Shayne Cantan in this game.
First inning
Joe McCormick would lead off the year for Boston with a swing and a miss. On the second pitch, he hit a weak dribbler up the middle of the right side. Mike Coughlin crept in slowly and then gave way to Casey Krause who ran through the middle of the field to put McCormick away with ease as Joe ran wide of the base. Tyler Mireault, hitting second then lofted the third pitch he saw high into the air to the right side that bounced away from Coughlin and Mireault scored the first 2025 Renegade run. Shawn Devenish then hit a grounder to the left side, Krause dropped to his knees and it rolled by him and then by Scott Hogwood and Devenish scored. Rob Dias was next and hit a hard grounder down the third base line that started foul as the umpire called foul early, but it came back fair. A blown call caused Coach Weissman to let out a growl. That would be the only contact Dias would make in the at bat and a sure run resulted in a strikeout. Drew Crook hit a second pitch grounder to Casey Krause to end the inning. After a half an inning, The Renegades led 2-0.
Justin Rhines would lead off for the Fire and hit a grounder to the left side. Drew Crook could not come up with it and Philly was on the board. Mike Coughlin was next and appearing in a game with Philly or the first time in years as he left the team to play for the Titans, then Bayou city and then Indy. The lefty hit a pop fly to the left side and Drew Crook made this play for the first out. John Margist then lofted a high bomb down the third base line for a no doubter run to tie the game up. Scott Hogwood was next and hit a high pop fly right at Rob Dias. Dias froze and was unsure where the ball was as he backed up and it dropped in front of him and Hogwood scored. Cesar Lezcano, who flew in from Arizona then lofted a similar type of hit to the left center of the field, this time Dias reacted quicker and made the stop as he and Zuccarello both went after the ball. The surprise of the lineup was Casey Krause hitting 6th. He hit a fly ball up the middle. Shawn Devenish could not find it in time and Philly took the lead. Rhines, in his second at bat of the inning then hit a hard grounder up the middle that got by a diving Shawn Devenish and with Rhine’s speed was safe for the second time. Coughlin was next and hit a weak grounder to the right side that Guy Zuccarello gobbled up for the last out of the inning. After one, Philly led 5-2.
Second Inning
Chris Kimball entered the game to hit for Elana Regan to lead off the 2nd. He fouled off the first pitch and then waived at the next four, for the 2nd strike out of the game between both teams. McCormick fouled off three straight pitches, took a pitch and then hit a hard grounder that bounced of Casey Krause’s body and bounced away from him, as he tried to regain possession, McCormick was safe at first. Philly contested the call and the run stood. On the 4th pitch of Tyler Mireault’s at bat he lofted a rain maker down the third base line. Krause tracked it backwards and to his right and made a clean pick of the ball. Weissman contested the call, but the call held. Devenish then hit the second pitch down the left side, Krause angled backwards and tracked it well to nail Devenish for an all Krause inning. Philly would lead 5-3.
John Margist, hitting in the three spot started the second by lofting a high fly ball to the left side. It bounced near Drew Crook and the second hop hit a charging Joe McCormick and bounced away from him for a run. Scott Hogwood then hit a grounder right at Rob Dias. He laid out to his left and it bounced off him. Crook also fell in the same direction but it rolled past his feet and he could not get to it either as Hogwood scored on a ball that should have been stopped. Lezcano would be the first victim of the strikeout for Philly as Pat Krause went ten straight hitters before the Whiff. His Son, Casey was next and ripped a shot into left field that hit Joe McCormick but the ball was dead and McCormick could not find as it was just a few feet in front of him not beeping. The play had to be redone. This time, Krause hit a grounder to the left side. Grillo called a five sending Dias to his left and the ball rolled by his feet. Shawn Devenish flew over, dove and missed. Crook dove and missed and Krause was safe. Next was Rhines and with three strikes, he hit a hard grounder up the middle. Devenish laid out and made the stop in his belly and nailed Rhines quickly and cleanly. Coughlin then lofted a fly ball to the left side. It was right at Crook who did not line up the second bounce. Devenish ran far to his right, dove but could not come up with it in time as Coughlin scored his first run of the contest. Margist struck out to end the damage. Philly had a commanding 9-3 lead.
Third inning
Rob Dias would lead off the third for Boston. He hit a ball up the middle that hit Cochran in the foot as he made an attempt to jump out of the way. Some banter would start that he didn’t make an attempt to get out of the way, but that came from people in their 30’s, not their 50’s. After crushing a bomb foul, Dias hit the 6th pitch into the air but it bounced in front of Krause who made his 5th stop of the game. Crook then laced a line shot that would graze Cochran’s back side. A loud “oooo” went out through the crowd of about 100 Renegade fans and nobody challenged his ability to get out of the way on that ball. Crook then hit a weak pop fly up the middle and Krause had his 2nd stop of the inning. Chris Kimball then weakly popped up to the right side to who else, Krause for another out. A bagel for the Renegades. Philly had a 9-3 lead after two and a half innings.
The first batter of the third was Scott Hogwood who hit a bouncer down the third base line. Dias gave chase to it and passed it to Crook who dove but it hit his ankles and rolled away from him. Crook was not quick enough to get the ball up and Hogwood was safe for another run. Lezcano was next and hit a line drive into left field. McCormick struggled to line it up and it got by him. Krause then laced another shot into left field, McCormick took a step to the middle and then corrected and went back to his right but was unable to stop the ball as it rolled well past the 170 line. Justin Rhines then hit another ball in almost the same spot – but this had more air. Joe McCormick would be the only one to have a shot, but he could not come up with it in time to beat the speedy Rhines. Mike Coughlin then hit a hard grounder up the middle. Devenish dove and it hit him and bounced away from him. Devenish crawled to it and picked it up at the time Coughlin hit first base. The call was ruled safe and after it was contested, the call stood. John Margist then hit a first pitch high fly to left field which hit Drew Crook on a bounce and kicked away from him for another run. Hogwood then hit a lazy fly ball to the middle of the field. Devenish danced around and then dove and was just a little late to get the ball up before Hogwood scored his fourth run of the game. Lezcano then hit a ball up the middle, Devenish dove and missed it and Kimball was there to pick up the ball. Lezcano was called safe on a close play that was not contested. Casey Krause then hit an absolute bomb into left field and missed a home run by a foot for his fourth run of the contest and the 9th straight run for Philly. Justin Rhines then hit a hard hopper up the middle of the field. Devenish lined it up and it hit him in the chest and he gathered it with enough time to stop the fire Rally. Coughlin hit a grounder to the left side, Dias did not go down and called for Crook who went down and the ball dribbled right by his hands for another run. Weissman called a time out and entered Elana Regan into the game to take over at third for Crook. John Margist was next and hit a grounder to the left side. Rob Dias finally had a room service out. The next hitter was rookie, Matt Kaulius. The rookie hit a three strike pitch up the middle and Zuccarello ranged to his right to make the stop to end a painful 10 run inning. Philly plated 10 runs, only the 13th time in team history an opponent had plated 10+ runs in an inning vs the Gades and only the second time in Beast of the East history. Philly led 19-3 and had put the game into the 12 run rule.
Fourth Inning
With this game in the bag for Philly, The Renegades needed to get some game reps and would leave the starters in. Joe McCormick hit the first pitch hard to the left side past Krause and into the third layer of the defense for a run. Mireault hit a grounder up the middle of the field that got past Margist. Philly called dead ball but it still had a beep in it and Tyler’s run stood. Shawn Devenish fouled off five balls in a row before striking out. Rob Dias then laced a shot into left field where Justin Rhines made a nice stop in the deep layer of the defense. This brought Elana Regan in for her first at bat. On the second pitch she hit a 40 foot dribbler to the coffin corner as Krause dove on his stomach and came up short. He tried swimming to the ball and pushed it away with his hands as Elana Regan scored a run. She screamed and jumped up and down to the delight of the Renegade crowd who cheered for her accomplishment. This brought Hunter Weissman into the game as a pitcher for his first career at bat against pinch hitter, Joe Yee. His first pitch was fouled off. Yee then hit a hard grounder down the third base line. Krause ranged far to his right and made the stop. Ron Cochran then took the ball from Hunter as the fourth inning would be over and the Fire led 19-6.
Fifth Inning
Joe McCormick would lead off the 5th inning of this 12 run rule game. On the 5th pitch he hit a grounder down the third base line that rolled along the line as he chased it and at about 50 feet he actually stepped on it slightly and kicked it away from the defender, Krause. We are not sure we have ever seen this play in our 25 year history. The umpire called it a do over. The result was about the same as McCormick hit it to the exact same spot and was put out by Krause as he ran to first. Tyler Mireault was next and hit a line drive into right field past a diving Mike Coughlin and into the deep layer to Dakota Hogwood. She lined it up and waited for it as Tyler beat it out. Shawn Devenish would get a cheap run on a dribbler down the third base line that Krause over-pursued. Devenish had his second run of the game. This brought Luis Rodriguez into the game to face Hunter Weissman. He hit the first delivery from Hunter to the right side and Mike Coughlin made the stop with ease. Elana Regan then hit a first pitch pop fly to the left side to who else, Casey Krause to end the 5th with the Fire up 19-8
Sixth Inning
In the last frame of the 12 run rule, Luis Soto hopped off the bench to face Weissman on the bump. Five pitches later he would head back to the bench with the first strike out of Hunter’s pitching career. That brought Ron Cochran back to the bump with Joe McCormick. Mac hit a hard grounder up the middle of the field off of John Margist for a run. Tyler Mireault then hit the 5th pitch into right field for a sure run but he missed first base on the inside of it with a poor line and Dakota Hogwood made the stop in the deep layer. The game ended on a pop up to the middle of the field off the bat of Shawn Devenish that Mike Coughlin snared. The final score was 19-9.
Wrap Up
For the Renegades, it was a tough start to the season and the first time they had been 12-runned since the Indy Thunder did it to them in the 2023 World Series. Joe McCormick and Tyler Mireault each scored three runs to pace the Renegade offense but the defense struggled. The player of the game was Casey Krause who was 4-4 with 10 stops on defense. This ass kicking would make it very hard for the Renegades to have a shot to win the Beast in 2025 due to the run differential.
Renegades Wreck the Strong 19-3
Hunter and Elana would be players of this game
The Renegades lost the coin toss and would be the home team as the Strong elected to take visitor. The game would be played on a field with huge dirt patches all over it and two very weak bases. For the Renegades Bryan Grillo and Gina Devenish would be the starting spotters.
First Inning
The game started off with strike outs by Matt Debrigard and Gianna Griffith off the hands of Jack Mosko. That brought up former Renegade Joe Buizon. He hit a three strike offering on the ground to the left side that got by Shawn Devenish who was playing his first game as a left shorty. Joe McCormick, now playing midfield ranged into left field to make the stop before Buizon reached third base. That was it for the Strong in the first inning.
Joe McCormick would lead off for the Renegades and hit a grounder past Gianna Griffith who charged it. Then past Darren Black who never hit the ground and rolled to Joe Quintanilla who was too slow to get to the ball as McCormick was easily safe on that worm burner. Tyler Mireault struck out next. Shawn Devenish then hit a second pitch worm burner under Griffith and Black to score the second run. Drew Crook was next as the Designated hitter. He laced a low line drive into left field and it was a foot race between Crook and Quintanilla who was playing the third layer. Crook had to run 100 feet and would beat Q who had to run 25 feet to his right. Crook won the race. Chris Kimball then did something, never done in his career. On the fourth pitch, he laced a shot into left field for a no doubter run. However, he broke the ball. Due to the stupid rule, he was now at a huge disadvantage and would have to come back to the plate with 3 strikes after sprinting 100 feet. He waived at strike four. Elana Regan ended the inning with a grounder that went right down the third base line which Darren Black gathered as he pulled it in to foul territory for the out. The Renegades led 3-0 after one frame.
Second Inning
Quintanilla, batting 4th led off and hit a grounder to the right side past a diving Guy Zuccarello but Chris Kimball was there to make the stop cleanly as it rolled off his feet and into his hands. Darren Black was next and hit a weak line drive to the right center of the field. Zuccarello was slow to the ground and it just got by his hands. McCormick hit the ground and it bounced off his hands as he dove with his feet to his left and the ball rolled away from him to the right. McCormick had plenty of time to recover and made the stop. David Ducasse was next and hit a nice grounder to the left side and he fell out of the batter’s box. The ball scooted past Shawn Devenish. Ducasse may not have heard first base cut on and off as he stumbled to the ground as he would have gotten the late base call. Ducasse got good wood on the ball as he may not even be a teenager at this point in his career. The Strong put all three balls in play and the Renegades led 3-0.
Joe McCormick hit the first delivery right off Ron’s upper body as he turned and took it off his glove arm and chest. Mac hit the 4th pitch to the right side that scooted past Alberto Moreno who stood up and gave chase on the ball but could not beat the speed of McCormick. Mireault then hit the first pitch hard on the ground to Griffith. She went down and smothered it with her legs and made a quick stop for the first out. Shawn Devenish then hit a grounder up the middle where Matt Debrigard was standing but he didn’t hit the ground and chased it into centerfield as Devenish scored. Drew Crook hit a three strike pitch into left field that would get by all three layers and roll very close to bushes that were at 178 feet because the field was not marked legally with enough space behind the home run line. Chris Kimball then hit a line drive into left field that went by Darren Black who could not track the ball. Even though the base cut out while he was running, Kimball was safe by a mile for his first run of 2025. Elana Regan then lifted a fly ball up the middle to Gianna Griffith. Griffith lifted it a split second before Regan hit the base for the second stop of the inning. Joe McCormick ended the inning with a grounder to the forty foot arc but his base running would be the issue as he took a step to third and then his angle took him wide of first base and that gave Griffith a chance to make the play for an all Gianna inning.
Third inning
In the top of the third inning, Nick Morin-Tylock replaced Gina Devenish as the caller on the right side in his first game appearance in his rookie calling season. Nick would not see any action in his first inning as Debrigard, Griffith and Moreno all struck out. The Renegades would hold a 7-0 lead.
Tyler Mireault hit a laser on the 7th pitch he faced into left center and even though he flew past first, he had plenty of time to come back and tag the base as the ball went past the 170 line. Shawn Devenish then hit a line drive down the third base line off Darren Black. Black was able to recover and make the stop. Crook was next and hit a lazy pop fly to the right side that bounced past Moreno up front. Crook had enough speed to get to third before Moreno could get a handle on it for his third run of the game. After a Kimball strike out, Elana Regan came up and hit a line drive up the middle of the field which got past the mid fielder, Matt Debrigard for her first run of the contest and second run of the day. Weissman would start to go to the bench as Luis Soto entered for McCormick and Hunter Weissman took the mound. Soto waived at five pitches, hitting two foul balls and went down on strikes.
4th Inning
As the Renegades took the field, changes were coming to the defense. Tyler Mireault moved to right shorty, Luis Soto took third base and rookie, Victoria Bond made her first appearance replacing Guy Zuccarello as the Designated fielder and she went to the deep rover position. Christine Diaz would pinch hit to lead off the 4th and she struck out, Black hit a weak grounder up the middle, Mireault would hit the ground and come up short as he called for help. Elana Regan, now playing mid field came up on the ball and made the pick for her first stop of the contest. Chris Nagle then come off the bench to hit for Ducasse. Arguably, three times the height of Ducasse, Nagle hit a grounder down the third base line. The ball rolled into foul territory after it went by the base. Luis Soto ranged into foul territory and picked it just as Nagle hit the base. Nagle scored his third career run against the Renegades. Debrigard was next and hit a grounder to the right side. Mireault took a few steps and dove without taking an angle at it. Regan came in, Kimball came in and neither could lift it before Matt hit third base and the Strong had two consecutive runs. Gianna Griffith was next and hit a line drive to a diving Tyler Mireault. The ball hit him and he gathered it quickly to make the first stop of his Renegade career.
Tyler Mireault got the 4th started with a grounder up the gut of the defense and beat it out running toward third. Shawn Devenish then worked a three strike count and hit a dribbler that crossed the forty foot line into the waiting hand of the charging Matt Debrigard for the out. Rob Thayer then entered the game to replace Drew Crook as the DH. He bought Hunter Weissman to the mound. Thayer went down on strikes. Hunter would stay on the mound to face Luis Rodriguez. Luis hit a grounder to the right side to a charging Moreno. Luis scored his first run of the year and it would be the first run scored against Hunter Weissman a pitcher. Elana Regan then hit the third pitch up in the air and scored her second run of the contest off Ron Cochran. Luis Soto would go down on strikes on a six pitch at bat off Hunter Weissman. At the end of four it was 13-2.
5th inning
The fifth for the strong would be weak as Moreno, pinch hitter Eli Nagle and Darren Black would all go down on strikes with just one foul ball off the bat of Black.
Tyler Mireault would lead off the bottom half of the fifth with a high pop fly to the right side that Wynter Pingle got to but was late to get in the air as Tyler scored his third straight. Devenish then hit arguably the best hit of the game deep into left field for a no doubter run. This brought Guy Zuccarello back into the game. He started as the designated fielder but after sitting a few innings, would get his first at bat of the season. He made contact on the first pitch but then would swing and miss to finish the at bat. Luis Rodriguez would have similar results against Hunter as the Gades whiffed in back to back at bats. Elana Regan was next and would end that trend with a pop fly near the 40 foot arc. Moreno charged it but was slow to the ground and Elana scored her third run of the game for her first career three run game. Soto was next and hit a hard grounder to the left side and the weak side of the Strong defense and Soto had his first run of the 2025 season and Hunter’s second run of his young pitching career. Tyler then hit the first pitch up the middle and it kicked off a Strong defender for his fourth run of the game. Shawn then hit a hot shot up the middle sending everyone running backwards for his fourth run of the game. Zuccarello ended the inning with a ground out to Debrigard, Boston led 19-2
Sixth inning
Renegade killer, Chris Nagle would start the sixth. He represented 4 of the Strong’s runs against the Renegades in the almost three complete games. He hit a grounder to the right side. Tyler hit the ground too soon and it was by him. He called for help and Luis Soto was slow to answer and may have been scared off by a surprise of Shawn Devenish bring on the wrong side of the field. Nagle had his second run of the contest. Debrigard would strike out for the third time for the first out. Giana Griffith then laced a line drive to the left side. Devenish angled backwards, dove and made a nice stop in the box for the second out. Moreno ended it with his third strike out.
Wrap up
The 19 runs scored for the Renegades was just the 16th time in team history scoring 19+ in a game, the last time vs the Bayou City Heat in the 2023 World Series. The 16 run differential is just the third time in team history the Renegades have won by that margin (17 run differential against Tyler in the 2015 World Series and 16 runs against the York Thundersticks in 2012).The players of this game would be Hunter Weissman for pitching his first 2 career runs and to Elana Regan for her three run performance, the first of her career. Other notable milestones included Nick Morin-Tylock calling his first game, Victoria Bond playing in her first game and Tyler Mireault making his first defensive stop.
