About The Renegades

Who are the Boston Renegades? 

The Boston Renegades are a team of blind and visually impaired athletes and volunteer coaches who compete in an adaptive form of baseball called beep baseball or “beep ball.” Founded in 2000 as a program sponsored by the Association of Blind Citizens, the team competes nationally and is one of the leagues most successful and longest tenured teams in the leagues 50 year history.

What is Beep Ball?

An adaptive form of baseball for the blind and visually impaired, beep ball is played with a 16-inch softball, which has been modified to encase a speaker that emits a beeping sound. On offense, the pitcher, catcher and hitter are on the same team and work together to put the ball into play. Once the ball is in play, the runner must get to the base before a player on the defense shows possession of the ball. The bases are made of foam and stand approximately four feet tall and house a speaker that buzzes. On defense, there are six players who work together to locate the ball with the aid of volunteer coaches who are called “spotters.” The Boston Renegades compete in the NBBA (National Beep Baseball Association), which has roughly 25 teams around the nation and in Taiwan.

What makes the Renegade culture unique?

The Renegades have built a culture rooted in respect. We love to learn, improve our game, compete and spend time together. This home grown squad is the only team in league history to slowly improve over the life of its program from the worst team in the league to one of the best and play in a championship game. We have had three players win league MVP awards and countless other all-stars. We also have had plenty of players on our roster with limited sports experience where winning for them is defined by playing their best, improved health, improved confidence, being part of a community and building life long friendships.
